The glider film that Brian and I are working on now has a title - Take Wing. We can also now announce that it is a commission for the Shot by the Sea film festival at the Electric Palace Cinema in Hastings, which runs from 25th July to 1st August. We went over to Hastings today to have a look at the space the video installation will be housed in. It's a shop, opposite the Electric Palace Cinema, that they have acquired and converting to their own use. Looks great and we're excited about showing the work there. Off to buy the glider kit tomorrow...
Brian will also be showing his Aurora and Sun films in the basement of the same space.
We are also working on another stereoscopic cloud film for the Collision arts festival at Area 10 in Peckham, South London from Thursday 11th to Saturday 13th September.

Click here for a short time-lapse of glider building this afternoon. Due to the instructions only being in Japanese and my inexperience at building model aeroplanes I am sure there are bits in the wrong places. Tomorrow I will attempt to cover the wings and tail with tissue paper so it has some chance of flying (there doesn't appear to be enough tissue for both wings and the tail so the instruction sheet may get used as well...)

Brian and I are starting work on a new film project that combines my love of modular construction and flat pack, and his expertise with stereoscopic video and fondness for building ad hoc camera equipment. We will be making a two screen, stereoscopic video, one screen of which will be time-lapse of us constructing a free flight model glider, the other screen will be footage of the flight using two cameras attached to the wings. We have no idea how successful the flight will be but the footage should be interesting! (Brian's dad is an aeronautical engineer and use to design and make his own gliders, but this skill has not been passed down the McClave generations - as yet)
So this morning we headed over to Worthing to the Sussex Model Centre to check out planes and find out if what we are attempting is actually possible. The staff at the model centre were very helpful but I suspect they think we are mental. Apparently it should work but there are quite possible outcomes of crashing pretty quickly after getting airborne or the glider going for miles and getting lost. They didn't have the model that we wanted in stock, but they've ordered in a couple for us to choose from - our choice is defined by a combination of what isn't too complicated to build but interesting enough to time-lapse, has most chance of flying with two cameras attached, and looks cool! Whilst we were there we did manage to get some cameras that are perfect for what we need, so we've got two of these to play around with.
Whilst we were there I picked up a much smaller model that I'll start constructing at the studio tomorrow. May even time-lapse and post here...

A copy of Field Report 2007 (The Field Report of the Field Study International) arrived from Field Study in Australia on Thursday. This is a limited edition book of artworks contributed by mail artists from around the world, a kind of catalogue or archive of some of the stuff that was going on in the world of mail art last year. It is one of the many publications organised, compiled and distributed by David Dellafiora (including ReSite, issue no.6 includes a version of Flat Pack 4). My piece for the Field Report was an audio CD of two binaural sound recordings made in Brighton in November walking to and from the BMC Gallery when the first finetuned Relay exhibition was on, attached to a page with a corresponding map of the journey.

Been a couple of quiet weeks since APEC OPEN 2008, the sun came out and was being deafened and getting no sleep at All Tomorrows Parties last weekend, but have been discussing a few upcoming projects and events, details of which will be posted here as they are confirmed.
Next Tuesday, 27th May, Brian and I will be at the School of Art in Burslem for Urban Vision's Art and Architecture Club talking about our work and the Views From Here project (unfortunately Tom is unable to make it). Think it starts at 7.30pm.

The film and sound installation with Claudia Molitor and Brian McClave is no longer going to be installed at the Chelsea and Westminster Hospital. We are hoping to confirm a new venue in the coming weeks. In the meantime, some of the stereoscopic test films that Brian and I have been making will be screened during the Open Studios at APEC in May

APEC is holding Open Studios the first weekend of the Brighton Festival - Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th May, 12-5pm. I'm working on a sky film installation incorporating time-lapse projections, a live video feed and stereoscopic video.
Brian McClave and I are working together again, on stereoscopic video of clouds for a sound / art installation with Claudia Molitor for Here Hear. (Claudia composed and recorded the pipe organ soundtrack for the Wrestle film in Stoke). The work is called Clouded and it is planned to be installed at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital later this month.
Brian and I are also discussing a long term sky related film project. More news as we figure things out and they start to happen...
