It flew! We went over to Mill Hill, just north of Shoreham, today to meet Grahame and see if we could get some useable stereoscopic footage. Everything went to plan and we have footage that'll look great stereoscopically. Click here for a very short, rough 2D edit from today's flying, including some video from one of the Vado cameras attached to the glider. It's only brief as I don't want to spoil the final film - you'll have to come to Hastings between 25th July and 1st August to see the final stereo version with the complete flight from take off to landing! (A red and blue version may appear here later.)

The glider is built! You can watch "The Making of 'Take Wing' (part one)" here. The eagle eyed amongst you will notice that it's a radio controlled glider rather than free flight as we were first planning. This is because after actually listening to the advice of lots of people who knew what they were talking about we realised a free flight glider simply wouldn't fly with the extra weight and unbalancing effect of adding a couple of cameras. As we've never flown a radio controlled plane either the chances are the flight will still end in disaster.
Depending on wind and rain - the forecast isn't great - we hope we can do some flight filming later this week.

07|JUL|08

After a few delays we started on the glider build for 'Take Wing' today. Unfortunately we noticed another small problem when we started to film, the cameras we're using for the point of view stereoscopic timelapse of the build (see Brian wearing it here) are too far apart. The model assembly work is quite intricate so we're holding things nearer to the cameras than we anticipated. Therefore we need to rebuild the apparatus with the two cameras closer together. So I'm now the proud owner of a shiny new bicycle helmet which we'll be gaffer taping and cable tying some cameras to tomorrow.
We also found that the FlyCamOnes which we thought would be perfect for the flight part of the film are no good for stereoscopy due to the fact they don't video at a constant 25fps. We'd have to manually sync the two videos before we could make the 3D video, which would be incredibly time-consuming and tedious. We've now got two Creative Vados (in pink!) which seem to be fine, and better image quality. I'm sure we'll find a use for the FlyCamOnes at some point in the future.
We've been getting invaluable assistance and advice from Grahame Algar, an experienced model aircraft pilot. (Thanks to my friend James in Miami, genial host of this site, for putting us in contact.) Over the weekend he made up a bracket with two pretend Vados and performed a test flight with his glider to optimise our chances of getting a successful flight. It seems that it will fly, so we just need to get on with it all now and wait for the right weather conditions...
